This May, guitar legend Bob Weir is reliving all of the Grateful Dead’s greatest hits with an unexpected co-headliner…the Marin Symphony Orchestra.
On May 7, Weir and the orchestra will perform the “First Fusion” show at the Marin Center in San Rafael, Calif. In addition to the 50+ orchestra members, Weir will also be joined by friends and former bandmates.
“Part of what makes this interesting is that’s not just going to be an orchestra playing Grateful Dead songs,” Weir said. “I’m going to be playing too, along with Jeff Chimenti, Jay Lane, Robin Sylvester, Rob Wasserman and some other guys, and there’s going to be real interaction between the symphony and us. … This is definitely going to go to some new realms.”

Grateful Dead founder and San Francisco favorite son Jerry Garcia died August 9, 1995. To commemorate the 15th anniversary of his passing, the home baseball team San Francisco Giants are celebrating Jerry Garcia Tribute Night at AT&T Park.
The pre-game activities will include music from Bay Area Garcia and Dead cover bands; a home plate ceremony featuring a video tribute to Garcia; bandmate Bob Weir performing the National Anthem; and Garcia’s daughter, Annabelle, throwing out the customary first pitch.
During the seventh-inning stretch, Dead member Mickey Hart will be leading more than 7,000 kazoo players tooting “Take Me Out To The Ballgame,” which will help loosen up fans and attempt to set a Guinness World Record in the process.
The whole event sounds like an amazing tribute to the San Fran legend. But wait, there’s more….

The University of California, Santa Cruz is the recipient of the massive archival collection from The Grateful Dead. The archives, unofficially began in 1972 by Dead staff member Eileen Law, is a rare and wonderful glimpse at the music and self-sustaining business practices of one of the most important and influential bands in history.
On view to the public through July 4th at the New York Historical Society, the exhibit has drawn from the archives’ holding to present a large-scale look at tour memorabilia, band documents, posters and artwork, as well as prototypes for band merchandise that were both used and not used. All of the items offer a peek at the inner workings of the legendary band, and provide rich details and perspective about the history of rock and the Sixties.
The group chose UCSC as home for their archives because of the university’s reputation for being progressive as well as long-time fans of the Dead. Their radio station has an all-Dead show, and the school has offered courses on the band. A newly renovated library is set to open in 2011, and it will house The Grateful Dead Archive — affectionately known as “Dead Central”– permanently.
